How to choose EV Charger for your car?

3/6/2024

People are more concerned about how to choose and buy an electric car when they have the conditions to install a home charging pile.

Currently, AC chargers are the main household charger (the price and power of DC chargers limit their installation in ordinary households). Firstly, confirm the power limit of charging piles allowed to be installed in your home, then confirm whether the electric vehicle on-board charger (OBC) you buy is single-phase or three-phase, and finally, buy the corresponding single-phase/three-phase charging pile. Theoretically, single-phase and three-phase charging piles are compatible with single-phase and three-phase on-board chargers. However, if the vehicle has a single-phase OBC, there is no need to install a three-phase charging pile.

In addition, you need to consider choosing a smart pile or a fool pile. A smart pile is a charging pile that can be controlled by a mobile app/identity authorization/charging management. In contrast, a fool pile has no human-computer interaction and can be charged by swiping a card or directly inserting a gun. The preferred direction is smart piles, which can be more convenient to control (such as scheduled charging, remote charging, etc.). Charging record management will provide many conveniences. There are also urban power grids (Hamburg, Germany) that stipulate that newly installed home charging piles must be smart piles.

Choosing a more powerful charging pile cannot shorten the charging time. The AC pile is just a power supply device, and the real charging power is determined by the On-Board-Charger (of course, the power of the charging pile is lower than that of the On-Board-Charger, so the bottleneck lies in the charging pile). For DC piles, although there are no restrictions on the on-board charger, and the battery can be charged directly, the upper limit of the battery needs to be considered. The maximum power that the battery can support is also limited. For most non-high-end electric vehicles, the maximum charging power supported by the battery is no more than 150kW. Even when charging at a 350kW super fast charging station, the charging power still cannot exceed the maximum power allowed by the battery (BMS). Of course, the charging power at different charging stages must also be considered. Currently, only a few high-end electric vehicles support relatively large charging power. For example, the Porsche Tycan supports a maximum charging power of 225kW, and the Audi E-Tron supports a maximum charging power of 150kW.
